When it comes to taking care of your corgi there are a number of different things to consider.

You’ll want to think about brushing them and taking care of their physical health.

Plus you want to make sure they’re getting plenty of exercise and definitely the food that you feed them.

But how much to feed a corgi to keep them healthy can be a little harder.

How Much Can Corgis Eat?

The important thing to consider is that corgis actually can tend to overeat. That’s because they are very high-food-motivated. What that means is you may have to be careful about the amount that you feed them.

This type of dog is prone to eating far too much, whenever they can. They’ll eat whatever you give them and that can make them a little overweight. So, you want to make sure you’re not giving them too much food.

At approximately eight weeks of age you’ll want to give your dog about 1/3 of a cup of food two times per day.

Once they get to twelve weeks you’ll want to give them about 2/3 of a cup of food two times per day.

Once they get to sixteen weeks you’ll want to give them about 2/3 of a cup of food once a day and a little less than that the second time each day.

But on the other hand, if you’re working on motivating your corgi to do things or to learn new tricks you may want to look at treats as a way to help.

How Much Should You Feed a Corgi in a Day?

In general you’ll want to feed them about 1/3 – ¾ of a cup of food two times a day, but it’s important to talk with your vet and keep an eye on your particular dog. Some may need a little more food while others may need a little less.

So, you need to make sure you’re considering different circumstances with your dog.

How Much Food Does a Corgi Puppy Need?

For a puppy you’re generally going to need a little more food. They tend to eat about ½ cup of food two times per day, which can be split between morning and afternoon. This is a good thing because it makes sure they have plenty of energy throughout the day rather than just once per day.

Your puppy will need a little more food as it starts to grow into adolescence, but make sure you’re tracking how much food you give it and only increasing by ¼ cup at a time so you can control how much your dog is eating.

Once your dog gets into adolescence you’ll want to start dropping off the amount of food they get each day by about ¼ of a cup until you get to the point where your dog eats all of their food but doesn’t seem to be overly hungry.

Keep in mind that there is no specific amount of food that’s ideal for an adult corgi. You want to make sure you pick what’s best for your dog based on mood, lifestyle and overall age. Plus, you’ll need to think about the type of food that they’re getting.

Dogs that exercise a lot will need a little more food. Dogs that are not getting exercise and not active will be able to eat a bit less. Also, make sure that you’re giving them high quality food that has enough calories and also monitor how many treats or even table scraps you’re giving your dog.

When you’re feeding your dog pay attention to how you feed them and how they react.

Some dogs do well with a single feeding a day with all of their food. Others prefer multiple feedings with food split throughout the day.

Some dogs may need more or less food at certain stages of their life so monitor that as well. If your dog seems to be extremely hungry at mealtimes then they may need more food. If they’re leaving food in their dish then they can likely have less.

How Much Should a Corgi Weigh?

In the process of determining how much to feed your corgi you’ll also want to take a look at their overall weight. Once again, this is something that’s going to vary based on age, size and more. Talking with your vet is the best way to go, but an adult male Pembroke will typically weigh 27-30 pounds while a female will weigh 22-29 pounds.

Keep an eye on what your corgi eats and how they look to determine if they’re getting enough food. For example, you should not be able to see the ribs of your dog, but you should be able to feel them if you touch their sides and rub softly (not pushing). Your dog should also have a waistline that is apparent.

Increasing Your Corgi’s Weight

Adding a little bit more food for your dog each day will help to increase their weight and get them to a safe zone. But make sure that you’re keeping track of what you feed them and how much weight they gain so you can keep them healthy.

Also, make sure that the food they do eat has enough calories. This is especially important if your dog is underweight but not eating all of their food.

Decreasing Your Corgi’s Weight

If your corgi is too heavy then you’ll want to work on decreasing their weight, which starts with giving them veggies in place of some of their food or in place of table scraps and treats. This will give them that feeling of being full but doesn’t add a lot of calories at the same time.

You may also want to increase the amount of exercise that they are getting and talk to your vet to make sure you’re going about the weight loss plan in a safe way.

Feeding Your Corgi

Your dog needs high quality food that has a good balance of calories. You don’t want anything too calorie dense because they could end up gaining weight. But don’t get something that is too low in calories or you could find yourself with an underweight dog even when they eat a lot.

Look for all-natural foods to find something that matches the needs of your dog and talk with their vet to find out more about the options and what they may need in terms of a special diet. You want your corgi to be healthy and happy, and that’s what your vet wants too.
